St Nicolas at Taplow

Our long-standing village playgroup, in the heart of Taplow since 1976 — learning through play, indoors and out, right up to the move on to Reception.

In the heart of the village

We are set in Taplow Village Centre — a quiet, safe spot on the village green with plenty of parking. We have two main indoor play areas and our own outdoor space beside the green, which the children use whenever the weather allows.

We can welcome up to 36 children, and we receive nursery education funding for eligible two, three and four-year-olds.

Rated Good by Ofsted

Ofsted inspected our Taplow setting in October 2023 and rated it Good. The inspector found a warm, nurturing place where every child is known as an individual.

“Parents are overwhelmingly positive about the care their children receive. They comment on the warm, welcoming, home-from-home ethos of the setting.”— Ofsted inspection report, October 2023

A typical day at Taplow

A predictable, gentle rhythm gives children a sense of security — with plenty of room for spontaneous fun along the way.

  1. 8.45 – 9.15amEarly drop-off (an optional extra). Children help the staff set out the toys and activities for the day.
  2. 9.15 – 9.45amArrival. A member of staff welcomes each child, who hangs up their bag and coat, finds their name tag, and settles into play.
  3. 9.45 – 10.15amRegistration and circle time — the day of the week, the weather, our theme, and what is on offer this session.
  4. 10.15 – 11.15amChild-led play across a changing range of activities, with free-flow out to the garden. Snack is shared in small groups: fruit or vegetables and a plain biscuit, cracker or breadstick, with water always available and milk at snack time.
  5. 11.15 – 11.45amEnrichment — yoga and mindfulness, gardening, sport, music or cooking.
  6. 11.45am – 12.15pmTidy-up time, then carpet time to end the morning: a story, songs, and show and tell.
  7. 12.15pmMorning children are collected.
  8. 12.30 – 1.00pmLunchtime. Children staying for the afternoon eat their packed lunch together.
  9. 1.00 – 2.45pmFree play — quiet activities inside, or bikes, sand and water out in the garden.
  10. 2.45 – 3.00pmAfternoon refreshments.
  11. 3.00 – 3.15pmTidy-up time, then a quick story together before home.

Whether your child comes for a morning, an afternoon or the whole day, the shape of their time with us feels familiar and reassuring.

What to bring

  • A named bag and a warm coat.
  • A water bottle, and a packed lunch if your child is staying for lunch.
  • A change of clothes, in case of spills and messy play.
  • A change of shoes.
  • Clothes that can get mucky — we play outside in most weathers.
  • Nappies and wipes, if your child needs them.

Water is always available too, and we provide a healthy snack each session.

    Part of one journey

Children usually join us around their second birthday, many of them moving up from our Dorney baby room — and because it is all St Nicolas, that move is a familiar, reassuring one for children and families alike.

When the time comes, many of our little ones go on to local Reception classes together — including St Nicolas Church of England Combined School — starting school surrounded by familiar faces and friendships made right here.
